Esta canción se la compuso Country Joe McDonald, el líder de Country Joe And The Fish a Janis Joplin, en el 1967, cuando salían juntos, en el período en que Janis era la vocalista principal de la banda Big Brother And The Holding Company. Estuvieron seis meses juntos, pero por motivos profesionales lo tuvieron que dejar, cada uno siguió su carrera. Joe era capricornio, al igual que Janis, tenia un año más que ella y estaba también metido en la movida hippie y la música psicodélica. Country Joe, décadas más tarde describió esos seis meses junto a Janis cómo una época feliz en la que salían a pasear por el Golden Gate Park, a cenar juntos o simplemente pasaban horas tumbados en la cama escuchando la radio y haciendo música, esperando a que pusieran alguna canción de Country Joe And The Fish o de Big Brother And The Holding Company para subir el volumen. Joe recuerda que Janis fusionó el nombre de su grupo con el de Joe: Country Brother And The Fish Company. Fueron tiempos felices para ambos.
